What is Ipé?

Often referred to as one of the hardest
and most durable woods known to man,
Ipé will outlast all other decking products.
It is rich in color and warm in appearance.

Ipé Wood, or Brazilian Walnut, also known as Ironwood or Pau Lope, is the superior choice for decking. Ipé decking is naturally resistant to rot, decay and termites. It is also eight times harder than California Redwood.

The color ranges from dark brown to olive-brown and sometimes almost blackish tones and can vary widely in grain.

Ipé's strong, tough resilient properties make it an excellent material and increasing choice for decking and siding. It is prized for its durability, strength and natural resistance to decay, wet conditions, infestations, and borers. Ipé has a Class A fire rating, the same rating given to concrete and steel.

Ipé is one of many commercial names used for the imposing group of trees from various species of Tabebuia. Some other common names used in reference to Ipé include Bethbara and Lapacho. The trees are mostly found in Brazil as well as throughout Central and South America, and some of the Lesser Antilles.

Ipé also resists surface checking and is naturally resistant to molds, which are two most destructive forces to the face of decks.

weathered Ipe after 24 years of service on the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. When compared to other decking materials such as redwood, cedar, or copper chromium arsenate pressure treated materials, Ipé gives longer life (3-5 times the life span) stronger resistance to fire, weather, insects and movement and is competitively priced with high grades of cedar and redwood. If you compare the one time cost of Ipé to the 3-5 times you replace other materials over the life span of Ipé the value becomes very clear!
